Having read an article about some of the issues with Contactless Cards. It was suggested that all banks would be offering cards without this facility. Recently following some fraudulent activity on my credit card, my account was blocked and a new account setup.

I requested to not have this facility on my new card, but was told Tesco were not offering this to their customers. Hence I have now purchased these card protectors, and will never use the contactless facility.

Contactless card fraud, dubbed ‘electronic pick pocketing’ is on the rise nationwide.

The move follows warnings that ‘electronic pick-pocketing’ is on the rise across the country.

The Community Safety Partnership in St Albans, Hertfordshire, decided to take action. Criminals started to skim card details from people’s wallets and purses using a handheld electronic reader.

It says its protective sleeves for bank cards use ‘blocking technology to prevent them being read’. The partnership, which includes the local council and police, is offering the sleeves free to local residents.

The organisation warns: ‘Contactless payment cards have led to an increase in electronic pick-pocketing.

‘Criminals are using handheld card readers to skim payment details and sensitive information without the victim realising.’

Last month a Money Mail investigation exposed alarming security flaws in contactless bank cards. Tests conducted by experts revealed that criminals can swipe money from these cards as their owners walk down the street. This can be done even as you sit in a restaurant or shop in stores.

This is despite the UK Cards Association trade body insisting that there are no known cases of this. Contactless card information has been harvested by criminals using handheld devices. They are then used to buy goods and services or to take cash.

Consumer group Which? however, suggests that people who are fearful of fraud. Should wrap their bank cards in tinfoil or line their wallets with it.

They say this will prevent a contactless card being read by machines. Either accidentally by retailers and restaurateurs, or by criminals.

Retailers – including Amazon, eBay and John Lewis – are selling specially designed metalic card holders. These can be used to help shield your card from fraudsters.
